Hello! I’m Michelle, a freelance science writer, editor and all-round word nerd based in Bristol, UK.
I work with clients to translate research into something that other people can actually understand and discuss.
Over 15 years of my career have been dedicated to communicating research – especially from the environmental and social sciences. I’ve pored over 1000s of research papers, interviewed many of their authors, and rooted out the details that matter to readers.
A master’s degree in Science Communication kick-started this specialisation in 2007. Career milestones since then include:
- 12 years with UWE Bristol’s Science Communication Unit writing, editing and marketing environmental policy briefs.
- Editorship of REF 2021 Impact Case Studies at the University of Bristol – ensuring the societal value of research shone through.
- An eventful stint in the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council’s press office. (Hello wall-to-wall foot-and-mouth disease headlines of summer 2007. I haven’t forgotten you.)
As a freelance content and copy writer/editor since 2021, I work on a diverse set of marketing, journalistic and policy-engagement projects. I never know what’s around the corner – in a very good way.
What I love about my job
- I write with a purpose. I love thinking about how I can support my clients – and their readers.
- I get to turn technical talk into plain English. Total word nerd win.
- Teasing out taut stories from intricate research is major fun.
- Every article and project teaches me something new about the world. Always learning.
